Where's Terry the Toucan Game App
The company wanted to build a lead generation campaign to build more of a presence for their email marketing and social media. So the marketing team came up with the idea to create a game for viewers interested in travel could play to win some form of incentive from the company and later then record their details to build the lead.
This was probably the fourth game we had made for us to build leads and previously were a form of quiz or puzzle and all been successful in doing well. This time we wanted to make the bird from the logo (Terry the toucan) more of a priority for the viewers to interact with, so came up with a sort of 'Where's Wally' style game but this time 'Find Terry'.
The scene's would be based from different regions and as there were two of us designers internally working on the artwork we split four scenes to two each. I got Brazil's, Rio Carnival, South America and Venice/Rome, Europe and the other two scenes were India, Asia and Tanzania, Africa.
We would both check back with one another that the style and form for the isometric build were consistent across each of the scenes.
After researching other examples of such games, building the base of the scene was required with buildings and structures first and then later to populate with characters, almost overloading in areas.
The process of making isometric illustrations
Using a grid for the creation process when illustrating the structures of buildings and other background material that the characters would surround was vital. As the isometric canvas was a great way to position characters as if they would be interacting on such surroundings and overly populating them was crucial in hiding Terry. My first idea when we came up with this game plan was to do a Rio Carnival scene and where else would be busier that an enormous carnival parade though that spot would never be where I hid the Terry.
Researching and learning the techniques for this isometric build was pretty fun and something I probably will try to use again in later projects. It's always good to add another style of illustration to my creative toolkit and the same has gone for a range of other media's too I just love to broaden my knowledge and put a use to it.
Rio Carnival - Sights, monuments and props
My initial illustration for the Rio scene began with the idea of using the logo known as Terry the toucan as the main attraction and would be illustrated as a float within a parade. In the rough sketch you can see the toucan where it began with my first thought on the idea and other refined sketches it was thrown into illustrator cleaned up and given more of a canvas to build layered detail adding the various colour ranges to make appear like a float.
The grand stands seen at the Sambadrome I also wanted to build from scratch using grids so that I could layer up all the various characters to make the game more challenging. One of the few things I didnt incorporate in the final scene was the Sambadrome's famous arches that are seen towards the end of the parade, and another was the companies tour bus, but this was to be included into one of the other scenes, in Africa.
Most of the buildings, monuments and other props for each of the scenes I had illustrated just from using photo references. With Carnival being the most renowned party on the planet we had access to lots of images within the company image library so referring to photos helped building the scene massively. Then the rest of the surrounding scene was famous sights and attractions most tourists would want to see and visit.
This process carried over into each of the three other destinations made.

The video is just a short clip of the game play of the Rio De Janerio scene on a desktop screen but most would be playing the game on their phones so the dimension of the game play would
appear in a square format. Finding Terry the toucan against with the countdown clock was the game and the time, recorded with gamer adding their details for the company to have a lead for outgoing emails for deals on travels with Tucan for potential clients.
